[Sorority Stuff] Recruitment Videos

Hi all! I'm currently in DC hanging out and getting some things done. My sorority just had their big convention in LA, and I'm so proud of my chapter and how we represented! Apparently they showed the above video to everyone from this year's recruitment, and I just rewatched it! You really do appreciate all the cheesy things about sorority life after you graduate (even if it's been like...a month), and this video made me miss everyone all over again! I wish I had been around for more instead of working all the time (like all those fun boathouse shots--I was at work!), but you can manage to spot me in a few scenes ;).

Also I really miss my long hair!

Brunch in Philly

Sunglasses: MICHAEL Michael Kors Sicily, Similar // Shirt: J.Crew Factory //
Shorts: My Sister's Closet // Purse: MICHAEL Michael Kors Selma
Since I didn't have work until later today, I got a chance to meet up with my 3G and her friend in Philly for some brunch! We went to Redwood on South Street, and it was absolutely delicious! If you're not picky, I'd definitely recommend it for brunch. However it doesn't have the huge selection you'd necessarily think of for breakfast foods, so if you're pretty picky I'd go for something else. It'd also be a great place for happy hour!

I'm totally going to be a brunch person in my future established life! I love the idea of meeting weekly or biweekly with galpals to eat my favorite meal of the day and talk about everything from Tinder experiences to jobs to travel to random gossip. It was also fantastic to talk to to WC grads about PG life since I'm in the midst of it right now. They're both '08 and '10 graduates who clearly have their lives pretty on track!

I'm going to have to spend a little more time in Philly in the future. It was a gorgeous day out, and if I didn't have to get back for work, I would have loved to roam around Central Philly some more. This looks to be a pretty eventful few days, so I'm excited to be doing something active again!

FIFA!

Or Why Soccer Bandwagoners are Okay

Hope you're all having fun watching FIFA! If you can't tell from my twitter, I'm pretty invested this year. I don't get to watch all the matches, obviously, since they often come on when I'm at work (#retailprobs), but I do like watching when I get the chance. I'm totally rooting for USA, obviously. South Korea and Spain were in my top three, but neither made it to the sweet sixteen, so I'm resting my hopes on you, ole US (or in this arena, should I say "young?").

Anyhow, this post is more about why I totally think it's okay if you're hopping on the soccer (football) bandwagon now. This is because FIFA is much, much more than soccer. Listen, soccer/football players, I get it. You've been following the sport your whole life, played it until you couldn't anymore, and now all of a sudden all these basic bitches are stomping over your precious territory? I swam my whole life, and the only time people gave a damn was when were winning gold medals or winning rivalries against those French. Everyone was suddenly into swimming, even the 400 IM. I get your pain and your mild sense of snobbery because I felt it too when it came to my precious chlorinated sport.

However, get over it. What's important is that 1) Your sport is getting attention and 2) This is an international event that's kind of bringing everyone together. Let's be honest. On the list of popular sports, soccer isn't that high in the US compared to other countries. Heck, we gave the precious "football" name to a totally different sport, and that football is probably the most famous. You don't see companies paying millions of dollars for commercial space at US soccer games, do ya? But FIFA comes around, and all of a sudden Buzzfeed is making hot soccer men lists, embarrassing but attractive engagement photos are popping up, and your favorite player just got a thousand more followers on twitter. Embrace the positive marketing this is bringing your under appreciated sport! Each FIFA that comes along, and the better we do in the tournament, the more recognition soccer will get.

Another thing is this: FIFA is more than soccer just like the Olympics is more than all the sports that make it up. These events are so important because they bring the international community together in a more successful way than anything else that's been done before. And in a positive way. The games we're watching are being watched by someone in a totally different time zone--how is that not awesome? Different places and cultures have their own daily lives that may or may not resemble our own, but for an entire game we're doing the same. exact. thing. And that, folks, is a beautiful thing.

Food in Sinchon

I got this one from my friend's camera, but it was my food (just better quality than my picture)! This was one of the most delicious things I remember about living in the food district of Seoul, South Korea. There was this little restaurant (almost like the Korean version of a diner) right outside my dorm at Yonsei (along the street that faces Ehwa), and if I remember correctly its translated name was "Strawberry." This delicious concoction was ramyun made with ddeokbokki. Ddeokbokki is basically made of rice cakes (the noodly looking things), fish cakes, and (in this case) a hardboiled egg cooked in a sweet chili sauce. It's one of my favorites in Korean food, and I always tried to get it when we saw street vendors! This was such a delicious combo, and it's almost impossible to recreate where I live now. When I visited my friend in California, her mom made us some for lunch, and I ate until I physically couldn't put spicy food in my mouth!

[The Style Files] The Girly Girl

The part of me that loves cutesy prints, flowing skirts, delicate details, and a whole lotta color. This summer I'm super into yellow--that vintagey, buttery kind--and prints. I'm obsessed with chambray shirts and pairing them with printed skirts or colored pants. I think the girly girl side of me is also what's completely obsessed with navy right now too. The chic look of a nice pair of navy dress pants with a striped top or a structure navy handbag with a yellow dress... I'm probably going to wind up doing a collage just for those two colors!

Destiny's Child Back Together...Kinda

Well, it's Michelle William's song featuring Beyonce and Kelly Rowland. But! Look at the precious shot of them altogether. Sisterhood, man, it's a strong thing.

The Want List

To Buy

Here are a few things I've been keeping my eye on! I'm hoping by making them more visual, I'll be able to prevent myself from needless spending on Starbucks or shopping on my break!

Cannon DSLR- Now that I'm planning to travel more, I really wish I had a nice camera to record my time. I'm looking through all my old pictures from studying abroad, bemoaning the fact that I didn't have a nice camera to capture each monument or moment I saw!

Lilly Pulitzer Agenda- The one I have now from Target is just too big, especially since I don't have as much going on as I did in college. I do miss my cheerful little agenda from junior year, and with the announcement of agenda pre-orders, I decided to jump back on and get one again!

Everlane Denim Dress- I want this dress so bad! How cute would it be in the summer with sandals and minimal jewelry? And then in the fall, you can wear it with leggings, boots, and a fuzzy knit scarf!

Samsung Galaxy Tab in White- I've been using my mom's iPad lately since I've found my Kindle Fire is just too small, and I don't like the set-up as much as I thought I would. I really like the Samsung Galaxy tab, though, and it'd be perfect for long plane or bus rides!

MICHAEL Michael Kors Multifunciton Jet Set tote in Vintage Yellow- I've been eyeing an MK tote for some time now, but I've never felt that I-need-this-in-my-life quite as much as I have when he came out with the tote in Vintage Yellow. I'm just imagining it as my carry on on flights... It's also got a zip center for important items and your laptop!

What's on your want list? I obviously don't think I'm going to own everything on this list, but, hey, if my budgeting goes to plan, I might just have something left over!

[TV Talk] I Need Romance (1, 2, & 3)

Okay, so I watched all three seasons of this show in an incredibly fast speed. I think it helped that I managed to watch them while doing cardio at the gym! They often got me to stay on longer, and, of course, my ear for Korean is getting better with each K-drama I watch, so I like think I'm being pretty productive (even if the content is total fluff!). Anyhow, I found this franchise from scrolling through DramaBeans after finishing "Reply 1994," and wanting to watch a better quality drama that was both romantic and funny with acting that wasn't going to make me cringe (Looking at you and your American scenes, "Heirs). The "I Need Romance" franchise was touted as being the Korean "Sex & the City," so, of course, I was immediately intrigued as "SATC" was probably one of the first shows I started binge watching. Being the difficult person I am, I started backwards, watching the most recent one first. I literally have no rhyme or reason as to why, but I'm glad I did. Here's my reviews of each broken up per season and in order from the first one. To sum it up, these dramas are perfect for those who get bored watching 90 minute episodes and stiff, awkward kissing scenes (Also lookin' at you, "BoF").

[In the Mix]: June 2014

I was just looking at my old "In the Mix" posts to see how I should set this playlist up, and I realized it's almost been exactly a year since I last did a post like this! Hopefully I can think to do these more often as they're pretty fun, and I obviously change up my musical preferences with the season (but seriously, I'm not even kidding!).
"8Dayz"-So obsessed with this song! It's so sweet and so cheerful. I discovered it when I was going through the weekly music Kpop shows (it's been so long since I've done that), and she immediately reminded me of a Korean Taylor Swift. Just saying, I called Kpop moving towards this direction (less manufactured Kpop and more singer/songwriter type performers). She's a Youtube singer who signed with Soul Shop Ent., and I'm pretty excited to see what she comes up with next.
"Stay with Me"- So, my siblings and I share an iTunes account with my dad, and this often means we get songs we don't necessarily want. They get K-pop and indie songs, and I get country and punkish boy band songs. However, I'm so glad my sister downloaded the whole Sam Smith album. It's been less than 24 hours, and I'm already obsessed with his voice. This song is just so sad and emotional, and yet, it has a catchy vibe to it. It's my perfect writing song.
"Now and Forever"- This was the song that made the main male lead, Joo Wan, famous in the US as a composer. It's got a jazzy vibe to it, and even though the English pronunciation is horrendous, it's unbelievably catchy.
"Pretty Brown Eyes"- I have a thing for bubblegum pop music, and this is no exception. Doesn't hurt that I have brown eyes either.
"Problem"- As if I couldn't love Ariana Grande or Iggy Azalea anymore. I didn't include "Fancy" to this list because, really, I've been jamming out to that song since March, so it's kind of faded on my summer list. This song is just so fantastic, and I already posted the video to show my obsession.
"My Oh My"- Like I'd make a playlist without SNSD. This is a Japanese song, and totally catchy in a totally bubblegum way.
"That's My Kinda Night"- I don't like country, and I love this song. You know you do too."Best I Ever Had"- Another fantastically catchy song with clever lyrics.
"Boomerang"- This was the last song on the mix CD my friend sent me, and it's one of the ones I replay constantly. You know how I am with boy bands. Even though the references are a little off (like Audrey and James Dean?), it's so perfect as a blast-in-your-car song that I can forgive it.
"Into the Blue"- Another song from the mix CD. I love Kylie.
"Hung Up"- Another mix CD song, and my favorite by far. I get so into singing along to this song that I'm pretty sure I've frightened my car neighbors.
"All the Way"- I knew of Timeflies, but for some reason I thought they were techno-y, so I didn't really give them a chance. Then all of a sudden this song came up on an 8tracks playlist, and I couldn't stop listening. It's so sweet!
"Say Yes"- This song brought Destiny's Child back together and it meshes Jesus with a dance beat. What's not to love?
"그대와 함께"- Or "With You" in English. This is a remake of a 90's song, and I got addicted from watching "Reply 1994" so fast. Plus I just find B1A4 to be absolutely precious.
"Pop a Bottle"- Another mix CD song! I swear if Allison ever wants to give up law, she could go into DJing. This song reminds me of Rita Ora, and it's such a summery song.
"I Could Give You Love"- Another slower song. It's from "I Need Romance 2012," and it's so emotional. It was played at all the sad, poignant moments, and it might be my favorite song from the franchise so far!
"바람났어"- This is a bit of an oldie from 2011, but I rediscovered it transferring songs from my old computer to my new one. I just love G-Dragon and everything he does. He's quite a genius, even if he's uncomfortable with that word!
"You Sound Good to Me"- Another super summery song that I'm addicted to. I can't wait to see what else Lucy comes up with!

Happy Father's Day!

I hope everyone had a Happy Father's Day! I got to have breakfast with my family before working a very busy shift at work in the afternoon! Here's the best Appa, Baba, Padre, Papa, Daddy, Dad in the whole wide world!

Currently I'm...

  • Reading... Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert. I know! I'm way late on this train.
  • Playing... Sims Freeplay on my mom's iPad... I'm going to have to delete it soon! Too addicting.
  • Watching... "I Need Romance," this Korean drama that's supposed to be like "Sex & the City." There's three in total, and I went backwards, so I'm almost done with the franchise. Let me just say that I've never laughed so hard.
  • Trying... to find a recipe for Cronuts...
  • Cooking... lots of yummy food ahead of time for meals throughout the week. Also some Ramen...
  • Eating... S'mores with my family!
  • Drinking... Diet Coke, which I've discovered that I lost the taste for...
  • Tweeting... About cats, the Liberty in North Korea summit, Kyuhyun being perfect... The usual ;)
  • Crafting... Some presents!
  • Going... to Greenlane for Father's day tomorrow! And, ya know, work.
  • Loving... My new notebooks (some shown above!)
  • Hating... Nothing really! Life is pretty calm right now as I'm prepping some things to come in the fall!
  • Discovering... Just how bad my wanderlust is.
  • Enjoying... The gym! Again! I keep it pretty low key, going on a cardio machine for 45 minutes while watching my Kdramas, and then I do a Pinterest workout. I usually follow the Tone it Up plans.
  • Thinking... How terrible my sleeping schedule is.
  • Feeling... Not at all tired, even though I should be!
  • Hoping (for)... A fast return on my FBI CRC.
  • Wearing... Well, an oversized college sweatshirt and yoga pants. But I did look presentable earlier today in a black peplum dress and these cute sandals I got from Target! Not to mention the gorgeous necklace my friend made me for my birthday last year.
  • Listening (to)... So. much. good. music. Sam Smith is love. So are these Kdrama OSTs.
  • Celebrating... Father's Day!
  • Smelling... The MK Very Hollywood perfume I found in my room.
  • Thanking... God, of course!
  • Considering... A lot of different career plans, actually. The world's my oyster, right?

I also loved reading these, and for some reason I have yet to do one on here!

Everything Oatmeal

Listen, I used to be the chick who hated oatmeal when I was younger. It was too thick, and while the first few spoonfuls taste good, it got old quick. My brother's ex-girlfriend turned me onto a recipe, though, that pretty much made me addicted to the stuff. Fast forward to the end of this past school year when I was cleaning out my apartment kitchen and found a superfluous amount of crushed walnuts and coconut flakes. I experimented a bit and discovered perhaps the most delicious oatmeal. ever. I don't use measurements. Just put in as much as you find tasty (except keep it minimal on the chocolate chips!).

Ingredients:
  • Oatmeal
  • Skim milk (or whatever milk/alternative you prefer)
  • A small scoop of peanut butter
  • Small handful of chocolate chips
  • Coconut flakes
  • Crushed walnuts (I'm allergic to almonds, but they'd be good too!)

Directions:
  • Fill bowl with oatmeal and milk (make sure you don't add too much milk!).
  • Add the rest of the ingredients as you wish.
  • Heat up in the microwave for a minute.
  • Mix everything together, and eat up!

Easy, huh? It's so good too. If you just take the coconut flakes, crushed nuts, and chocolate chips, they make a delicious snack as well.

[TV Talk] Reply 1994

Oh, did I love this show! It's been a while since I've been able to indulge in a full Korean drama. With US sitcoms, it's fairly easy to multitask while watching them (outline a paper while still knowing full well what's happening on "Trophy Wife"), but with Korean dramas I need to pay 100% attention to the subtitles, or I have no idea what's going on. So, once I finished up with school, I dove right into "Reply 1994." The last Kdrama I watched, as a matter of fact, was "Reply 1997," and I fell head over heels in love with it, so, of course, I put my good faith back into the PDs for this spin off.

Here's my issue with most K-Dramas I watch. They move pretty, freaking slow, and every little thing that happens means something way, way more. Twelve-year-old me would have a huge complex by now if I had grown up watching them like I did sitcoms. I mean, eating the same apple as your crush counts as an "indirect kiss" and is thus debated and replayed in memory for at least a few episodes. Never mind anything past kissing, good lord. Not to mention, Asian dramas are notorious for having very, um...stiff romantic scenes. Just look it up or watch one. Let's just put it this way: An incredibly popular drama trope is to have the couple trip somehow (and probably before they even know each other) and land on each other's lips (Note: "Boys Over Flowers").

While "Reply 1994" did not have the same pacing as "Reply 1997," which seemed to zoom through, it did have a fairly good pace considering its 1 hour to 1 1/2 hour episodes. I was in stitches laughing at some scenes, and because I took a Hallyu course when I studied in Yonsei, I was fairly familiar with the culture allusions they used (Like Seo Taji, haha). It also helped that the students were Yonsei students, and I got to see that familiar ivy covered building in many shots!
Anyhow, here's the basic premise: Sung Na Jung is the daughter of Sung Dong Il & Lee Il Hwa, and the family has just moved to Seoul from Masan and opened up a boarding house in the Sinchon district where Yonsei is located. They take in other "country bumpkins," which leads to our motley and absolutely perfect cast: Sseureki, also from Masan and close to the family, (literally means "Trash"), who is basically an oppa to Na Jung and is in medical school, Samcheonpo from Samecheopo, who looks like he's thirty when really he's the youngest of the group, Haitai from Suncheon, nicknamed for the Haitai Tigers, Binggeure(meaning "Smiley") from Goesan, nicknamed for the Binggrae Eagles, and Binggeure's cousin, Chilbong (nicknamed for his legendary seven shut-out baseball game), who is actually from Seoul. The main plot line is trying to figure out who Na Jung winds up marrying and is the yeobo of the 2013 crew.

It's funny and sweet and serious in all the right moments. Frankly speaking, I think the husband is fairly obvious because Na Jung never wavers in who she likes, but I won't spoil it here! I will say I think Chilbongie might be my favorite ever because he's so goofy and sweet, and, you know, the baseball thing doesn't hurt either. If anything, I think you ought to watch "Reply 1994" first and then "Reply 1997" because it might feel a little slow if you watch in reverse orders. I'm currently pretty much blowing through the "I Need Romance" franchise, so I'll update with that later!

A Street in Toledo

Bringing back some travel snapshots as my wanderlust grows! I'm not even sure why or how I have this little picture of some street in Toledo, but it's become one of my absolute favorites. I think it's because I can picture myself walking along those pebbled roads and living in one of those little homes, right below the castle overlooking the place. I only got to spend a day in Toledo, and I absolutely loved its architecture. I actually took a train there because the prices were fairly similar between train and bus, and I just remember my friend, Aaron, said that when he had money to spend, he was going to only travel by train in Spain. A lot more leg space.

[Style Files] The Artist

As the summer months come rolling in, I've been much more inclined to the artistic side of my style personality. I love the ease and comfort of something slouchy and comfortable. I've been cleaning up and updating my Pinterest a lot in my spare time (watch sitcom, clean up a Pinterest board), and I've been collecting this fun little "Artist" board of all the different looks or pictures that inspire that artistic, slightly hipster side. I'd like to imagine myself in a pair of slouchy trousers with an olive shirt haphazardly tucked in with my hair naturally wavy while riding my bike home from the farmer's market, burlap sack filled with all sorts of fresh goods. I'd make a fresh green smoothie and then get to work writing by an open window or attempting at watercolors while my cat curls up at my feet or on top of some papers...

Anyhow, hope you're all enjoying the sun and warm air as much as I am!
