[Sorority Stuff] On Why I Joined One...

...and why I'm glad I did.
I feel I should begin this post to explain more about me a little. Before I tell you all the ways in which I do not fit in with the stereotypical image or how my parents thought I was joking when I said I was going to rush, let me make this disclaimer. I am in no way, shape, or form trying to make myself seem different, and therefore cool. I am different, but so is every other person in the world that I have ever met. What I want to explain to you first and foremost is who I was sophomore year when I decided to actually try rushing and why I ultimately joined ZTA.

I have always been the quieter overachiever since high school. I worried about getting B's, my friends were all pretty much like me, I took every AP class under the sun, I worried so much about college I was constantly sick, I swam competitively all year round, and I thought I could do everything academic-athletic-social. Although I made some changes my freshman year, the basic foundation was and will always be there. I was lonely sophomore year fall semester. I was balancing working multiple jobs, taking classes, swimming, being an officer in different clubs, and missing my friends who were abroad or who had transferred terribly. Any small change I made freshman year (whether it was slight, slight, romantic interactions or going out more or what have you), reverted all back to my high school self. I passed out in my bed at 8 pm on a Friday--no one was going to call me to go out and I had just finished a long day that began at 8 am and involved a 2 1/2 hour swim practice somewhere along the way. I could barely make the walk from the Dining Hall to Chester let alone contemplating socializing on the most social night of the week.

And then I thought about my recent time in Seoul and my favorite group ever (SNSD). I've never been the most social or outgoing person, and in high school, when I was first becoming interested in K-pop, I would watch all the variety shows and programs SNSD was on. And I liked the idea of what they were. They were nine girls who not only performed as a group together (formulated completely by their agency, SM Entertainment), but they, at the very least, put off this image of sisterhood. They all lived together, and while they each had their own lives and interests and entertainment activities, at the end of the day they were there for each other. They could be busy for months on end in separate directions (a musical, a modeling gig, a variety show, a drama guest appearance) and trust that they could always come back to this one group, SNSD. I realized, I didn't just want that. I needed that. I was never going to completely slow down, and I had yet to find a group of friends or teammates that cared enough to be the kind of support system I saw in SNSD.

Then I started to consider the sororities on campus and all my acquaintances who were in one of them. I saw them walking together or having an unofficial table where they always could sit at if they wanted too. I knew girls in every sorority, and I also knew they were all busy in separate directions. But, ultimately, they all showed up to a meeting together once a week; they came together to put on shows and activities, and I knew they could all hangout over lunch or in one of the Western Shore houses. And I slowly realized that sorority life could be my SNSD life.

And I rushed.

Rushing was a little dramatic towards the end--that's something I won't go into, but I ultimately wound up with ZTA (who has nine founders, as if fate wasn't playing a role there!). And three years later, post-graduation, I couldn't be happier that I did. I got my SNSD even if I didn't totally realize it at times. Whatever I did in college, no matter if I disappeared into my work or studies for weeks or went on some tantrum of frustration, I could always, always come back to ZTA and be treated no differently. And I know, no matter where I go in the world, I can always come back in whichever way I choose and be unconditionally welcomed. If that's cheesy, then just look at all the alumna chapters exist for every sorority. Or even look at weddings--I betcha there's at least one sister invited or even in the bridal party.

I'll delve into the details of Greek Life in later posts as I think of them (like the money question and whatnot) since this post is already far too long. But in my contorted, clearly-me view, this is why I wanted to join a sorority and why I will be eternally grateful that I did. I'm not 100% sure if this TL;DR post made total sense, but we'll see when I inevitably reread and edit it!

[The Insta Life] Beginnings of Summer

If you can't tell, I'm a foodie instagrammer. I love it! Here's about the end of the year leading towards the beginnings of summer (right before I jumped into working part-time again leading up towards leaving for my job-job).
  1. With my siblings! My family came to college for Mother's Day, and we went out to dinner by the waterfront. Can you guess who's the oldest?
  2. Delicious food at Lebanese Taverna: I helped out with the set-up of the Sophie Kerr event in Baltimore, and Owen suggested stopping at one of his favorite restaurants in Annapolis on our way. It was absolutely amazing--fresh pita bread and Lebanese food... I wish I could go back right now, actually.
  3. Dessert: At the after-party for the SK Event, we stopped by the after party. Dessert was hard to get, so we grabbed this guy the first chance we got. Delicioussss.
  4. Homemade Sushi: When my Big came back for graduation festivities, she finally put to use her sushi making kit. It was pretty delicious, but I think we're both more for just eating out next time after all that effort.
  5. Our Relationship: My big's and mine relationship in a nutshell haha.
  6. Kellyanne! Kellyanne was the only other 2014 graduate in my pledge class. It's so sad we're leaving the rest of our PC.
  7. Booze Cruise. A shot of the ship as we were walking towards it at Mt. Vernon. WC started this tradition my freshman year where the seniors toast at Mt. Vernon, George Washington's home. A night of dinner, dancing, and enjoying the summer air up top the ship-- #privateschooljoys
  8. Alex & Ani: The A&A bracelet my little got me for graduation--I'm obsessed! It's the Path of Life charm.
  9. Ingredients for a fruit smoothie: The minute I get more strawberries I'm making this again...

Collages of College

You knew I'd use that pun at one point. I don't know why you're even surprised. Here is my last four years in pictures, and to think that even these don't totally capture the experience and the people I met! I can't believe the difference between the girl blowing kisses into the webcam in the first collage and the girl (or should I be cheesy and say "young woman" or "young lady"?) in the sparkly silver dress in the last collage. Washington College was a true experience all around, and I'm not sure this whole alumnae status is going hit me until I don't return in August.
Freshman Year
Highlights: Became instant friends with my Peer Mentor group, became best friends with my roommates, studied Mandarin for a bit (before my tutor got deported), went out on the weekends, got to visit DC, did a mini-triathlon, bonded with a taxidermy beaver named Peter, had my first kiss (sad, I know), made friends with people around the world and right in my backyard

Summer in Seoul, South Korea
Highlights: Met friends who I still have today, ate food I still dream about now, studied at one of the best universities in South Korea, embraced this whole Asian thing, came this close to seeing my beloved Oppa in person (fangirling, man), got to go to a music show (Inkigayo), got to see G-Dragon in person, chopped off my hair for an SNSD Jessica circa 2009 "Gee" days cut (not recommended), survived one of the rainiest moonsoon seasons Seoul has had yet, finally, FINALLY tried a French macron, fell absolutely in love

Sophomore Year
Highlights: Learned the meaning of "overworking," became a part of the Peer Mentor crew, white Halloween, joined ZTA, got my biggity big big and joined the City Fam, saw Chicago live on Broadway in NYC, went to California for a week to visit aforementioned Seoul friends, visited San Francisco

Study Abroad in Madrid, Spain
Traveled to a billion different places in Spain and around Europe, made friends I still talk to today, used and abused my Instagram account, ate wayyyy too much McDonald's (it was right by the metro station I used to go everywhere and had free Wi-Fi!), got a hang of that Spanish thing, danced the night away at discotecas, schooled peeps on "Gangnam Style," met up with WAC friends in England, just basically fell in love with travel even more

Junior Year
Highlights: Finished up my last year of swimming, got my leeetttleeee, became best friends with my big and little, had a ride of a time living in an apartment with my roommates, got to spend a last semester with some of my favorite seenyas, met my 3G in person finally, studied black history on the Eastern Shore

Senior Year
Highlights: My two cousins got married, danced with my mom and grandmom (or more we "boogied"), went out to the bars of Chestertown, spent countless nights in Freddy, had my last Peer Mentor activities, went to an outdoor camp with the PMs on my 21st, got a guy to serenade me and my birthday twin, learned about "The Jungle Man," got my G-little, became even closer with my sisters, had my last Relay 4 Life, chopped my hair off again, ran the Susan G Komen Race 4 the Cure, GRADUATED

I can't wait to see what life has in store for me, but I can't believe my four years ended already. Going to miss you, C-town.

[Style Files] The Transparent Brand

Let me tell you something. Facebook has been nailing it with the ads for me lately. After a successful experience with Graze, I was intrigued by an ad for Everlane as it used the words "luxury" and "$15" in the same picture. I'm all about good quality for cheap quality prices, so I clicked, interested in what I was being promised. And what a whirlwind. Basically, Everlane is all about radical transparency, according to its "About" page. It wants you to "know your factories, know your costs, and always ask why." After being greatly disappointed in TOM's business practices (I wrote a post on it somewhere), I sort of gave-up on being conscious in terms of clothing in general. However, as I'm getting older and wanting to put my travel dreams into reality, I'm beginning to realize I need to be pickier about what I buy. Quality over quantity, right?

Anyhow, Everlane was launched the same time I was entering college in the fall of 2010 by Michael Presyman who "left his job in venture capital to start his own business." They're based in San Francisco with a team in New York City, and their mission is to find the best factories for each creation, whether it be a rayon T-shirt or the gorgeous, Italian leather Petra bag that I will own one day. Everlane says they visit factories for months and establish personal relationships with the owners in order to ensure the factory's integrity. I absolutely love that they "require stringent workplace compliancy paperwork." They also will reveal the manufacturer's cost and their markups to show you that they aren't ripping you off, like a lot of designer brands.
Keep in mind, this brand isn't out to compete with the likes of Forever 21 or Old Navy (two stores I love for their cheap, cheap prices). Rather, it's focus is on transparent, minimalist luxury. Yes, that slouchy cashmere sweater is going to cost you $140, but you're also going to know that it's 100% Grade A Cashmere for a softer and warmer knit, and it was created in a factory in Hong Kong, run by Mr. Chu, a man who started as a factory worker and has a "unique slow-growth philosophy."

For the longest time, I thought this was a little known brand, but I keep seeing recommendations for it everywhere from Into Mind to WhoWhatWear. Here's to hoping it grows even more and maintains this beautiful transparency.

Atelier Cologne

So, as you know, the book that was a part of my internship was all about perfumes. One of the brands that kept popping up was Atelier Cologne. In searching for pictures of the different colognes and perfumes, I stumbled across its website and fell instantly in love with the way it markets and advertises each one. In addition to there being copy setting up the mood, there's these gorgeous detail shots to go along with each as well. I fell instantly in love with all of them, and I had to share!

What do you think? I'm thinking my next perfume purchase is coming straight from Atelier... You know I'm a sucker for good advertising!

Graduation!

This past Saturday I graduated from my little college on the Eastern Shore! It hasn't quite hit me yet, I don't think. Now that I have my documents in hand, I'm busy getting everything together so I can be placed in my job (more on that when I'm actually placed and the contract is signed ;)).

Congratulations, Class of 2014!!

[Style Files] The Jet Setter

As you can see from my original post about my style personalities, Jet Set is one of them. For me it's all about clean lines, fitted but loose shapes, and an overall theme of being extremely put together in the most minimalist way possible. Here's my moodboard for a Jet Set summer. From horizontal stripes to navy to the classic straight leg cropped pant, I'm seriously wishing I had money to go shopping and then to travel around the world somewhere!

DC Day Trip

Since it's going to be a while until I live in such easy driving distance from DC (seriously, so easy), I escaped to the city for a day trip with a few friends. We didn't do anything spectacular, just moseyed about the city, taking in the day (when it didn't rain!). There's only so long I can be in a small town these days, at least when it comes to Chestertown, and I loved getting back to a city even if it was just for a few hours. We grabbed lunch at on of the Potbelly Sandwich Shop and dinner at Founding Farmers--both excellent choices! We got lucky and grabbed a table quickly so long as we ate within the hour instead of waiting ninety minutes for a seat.

I even got to meet up and catch up with my 3G!

[Sorority Stuff] The Last of the Lasts

So, my sorority related posts are pretty much going to become fairly sparse from now on as I have officially become a ZTA alumnae, and I will not be participating in all the fun stuff being at college brings. I'm probably going to do a compilation post down the line and maybe some alumnae and crafty things, but overall, it's time to bid adieu to one of the biggest parts of my college career. So, here's a few of the final things I've done with this great chapter of mine.

Formal

My last Zeta formal! I had a ton of fun dancing into the night (and by night, I mean like 10:30...). It's about the closest thing I get to dancing in clubs in Madrid, and I took full advantage. I refused to be concerned about any drunk shenanigans or anything, and I just danced. My thighs hurt the next day!

Alumnae Ceremony
In our last ritual, we were made into alumna! These are a few of the seniors who were around for the pictures after brunch. Emily made the cutest lunch for us after the ceremony, and we went to the apartment of a few sisters to sit around and talk and laugh and muse on being old and graduating.

Senior Ceremony
Little hidden there!
To celebrate being seniors, we all went out to dinner at the Fish Whistle, and then went back to celebrate with the rest of the chapter, giving speeches for each senior and giving them gifts of letters from all the sisters. I cried, of course.

Can't believe this incredible experience is coming to an end. Nothing felt quite real until this moment!

[The Insta Life] Artsy Ways

With the school year coming to an end (as well as my undergraduate career), I'm beginning to turn towards what I like to call the artsy-sometimes hipster-sometimes granola lifestyle I actually wish to pursue. I've haven't fully articulated my idea of happiness, but it involves me with fabulous wavy hair riding a bicycle home from the farmer's market, fresh groceries in my reusable burlap sack, ready to make smoothies before turning into to write for the afternoon. Or paint. Or sketch. Anyhow now that I have time and energy to devote to my arts side a little more (it's been sorely neglected for like eight years), I've been taking full advantage.
  1. Spring has sprung! Those gorgeous purple flowers were blooming outside the literary house on my way in to work one day. They came right after an awful storm, and it was such a breath of fresh air to have them around. It was a reminder that cold days are over for now.
  2. Mini Cupcakes: A girl I work with brought these in after her aunt in NYC sent them to her for her birthday. They are possibly the cutest and most delicious cupcakes I have ever seen and tasted. They're from Baked by Melissa and they have all kinds of flavors that you can just pop into your mouth.
  3. My First Broadside! I finally printed the beautiful broadside for my school's foreign literary magazine. My friend, Clair, drew the illustration, and I, with a lot of help, designed the PDF. We printed it on this gorgeous, creamy paper (Arches, I believe?) with deckle edges. I feels like a treasure map.
  4. Paste Paper: Such an easy activity! Mix cornstarch and water to make a paste. Then mix with acryllic paint and go to town on heavier paper (make sure you wet the paper first). Use plastic combs, sponges, anything to create texture. So easy and so relaxing.
  5. Close Up:  Here's a close-up of one of my favorites! I used  bright blue paint and did dots of gold.
  6. Printing my Journal: The machine as it's about to print gold lettering on the journals I worked on over the past year.
  7. The Waterfront: A view of the water during my run. Going to miss this the most when leaving Chestertown!
  8. Graze: So Facebook has kept popping up this offer for delivery snacks. It's normally $6 a box, but for the first time it'd only be $1. So, of course, I tried it. I've really loved my box so far. I've tried the dry apple and toffee as well as this pretzel and pumpkin seed mix. I need more inventive ways to snack (and healthier) and I love the idea of this box!
  9. Watercolor: My friend, Hilary, has been instagramming her watercolors lately, and I felt inspired to try a hand at my own. I've been sketching a little here and there, but as I try to take my travel like more seriously, I want to be able to create these little watercolors for myself. I might be taking a page out of the nineteenth century as well... Anyhow, this was my first attempt! Shaky, but we're getting there.

4. & 5. Finish My Theses

This is a little overdue, but I had to mention that I am completely done with both of my theses! (You can see the prezi from my Spanish defense here, if you're that interested). My thesis is entitled, "The Role of Female Archetypes in Byron's Don Juan and Becquer's Rimas). It has been over a year in progress between coming up with a proposal and putting it all together (in two different languages, no less!), and I. am. done. I got honors on my Spanish one, and while I have not heard back about my grade on my English one, I know that it was approved so I at least passed. The above is another Spanish major and myself out to a celebratory lunch with our advisors! I actually enjoyed writing my thesis with my advisor, and I'm going to miss her next year.

[Style Files] The Essentials

Items to Make any Outfit Chicer
So, as I've been browsing different fashion inspirations now that I have more free time than I know what to do with, I've been noticing little trends. This is purely my opinion on what I find stylish, of course, but I feel every time I look at an outfit and think, "Wow, I want to wear that," there's always one or two elements that contribute to that model-off-duty feel. So, I decided to compile a list!
  • A Watch: I prefer gold because I think it's totally classic, but it all depends on your jewelry preference. A very clean, classic watch without too many crystals or too busy a face instantly adds a little something to an outfit.
  • A Pair of Sunglasses: I'm an aviators fanatic, but I understand you gotta find what fits your face. I just think there's so much history in aviators--from the fifties and sixties to the Top Gun look to today. I love them. And, of course, we all know from celebrities just how much a pair of good sunglasses can help. Aviators (and wayferers) help add to that casual just-threw-this-on style.
  • A Structured Handbag: I love structured handbags--especially the kind you carry on your arm (of course have that extra strap for when it gets too tiring). There's something eternally elegant about them. Today I'd try to go for something in saffiano leather.
  • A Blousey White Top: This top will take you through anything. Tuck it into a work skirt for a polished look or throw it over a pair of skinny pants for something more casual.
  • A Pair of Medium Wash Skinny Jeans: Even I, who hates jeans for the most part, understand the power of a good-fitting pair of skinny jeans. Dark wash is much too dark and often will rub on clothes and purses, and light jeans can easily be both unflattering and too light for more wintry weather. Medium was is simple and will generally go with anything. Find a pair that fits properly (I'm still searching!) and have tailored if necessary.
  • A Pair of Black Skinny Pants: Not black jeans, black pants. Same reasons as for jeans! They're a step up from leggings, and almost as comfortable.
  • A Jean Shirt: I'm actually obsessed wit jean tops! They ought to be oversized (maybe go to the men's department!) and very casually. Wear it open over a thinner top or buttoned up with a scarf or under a sweater...Wear it with printed pants or shorts or anything really.
  • An Army Green Vest: I'm in search for one. I just think it's such an easy model-of-duty addition It looks great layered with bold necklaces or over floral prints... It's such a unique and yet neutral piece.
  • A Pair of Leather Shorts: Keep them bigger and longer so they don't become hoochy. I prefer brown, but black could work just as well. Leather shorts are great for adding a different texture to any outfit.
  • A Pair of Nondescript Black Heels: Duh :)

Happy May Day!

Today marks the beginning of May! Even if this is the month allergies kick my butt the most, it's still one of my favorites! And my school kind of has an awesome tradition going on to celebrate this day. ;)
